Decanates:
Part Four
In the previous three articles of this series, I introduced the
concept of decanates, named the three decanates of each of the 12
signs of the Zodiac, and presented examples of the decanates for
well?known people with birthdates in Aries, Taurus, and Gemini.
In the current article, I shall continue the decanate examples
for additional signs of the Zodiac. As before, let us assume that
we are in a social situation without an ephemeris and all that we
have with us is our knowledge of astrology. People come up to us,
socially, to discuss astrology. All that they tell us is the month
and the day that they or someone close to them was born. I shall
use well?known people and their birthdays to illustrate the power
of the decanate.
Diana, Princess of Wales, now known as the people's Princess, is
still a topic of conversation. She was born on July 1, so her Sun
is at about 9 degrees of Cancer, in the first (Cancer) decanate
of Cancer. Diana is clearly, like her mythological namesake the
Goddess of the Moon, a person whose personality is ruled by the
Moon. We see here the Cancer decanate reinforcing the Cancer attributes
of the Cancer Sun?Sign. From the birthday alone we see that Diana
is the quintessential mother and nurturer.
O.J. Simpson's name is still in conversations all over the world.
While we have access to an accurate chart for most of these people,
let us assume that all we know is that O.J. was born on July 9,
with the Sun at about 16 degrees of Cancer, in the second (Scorpio?ruled?by?Pluto/Mars)
decanate of Cancer. Like other Cancers, O.J. knows how to please
the public. However, the Scorpio?ruled?by?Pluto/Mars?decanate of
Cancer colors his personality with aggression (Mars) and mystery
(Pluto).
Patrick Stewart, who we all know as the Captain Picard of the Starship
"Enterprise," was born on July 13, with the Sun at about
20 degrees of Cancer, in the third (Pisces) decanate of Cancer.
How natural it must be for him to play the role of a father figure
(Cancer) with caring and concern (Moon.) The Pisces decanate, ruled
by Neptune/Jupiter is a perfect gateway to an acting career.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose birthday is July 30, has his Sun at
about 6 degrees of Leo. What a fine example he is of the Leo decanate
(ruled by the Sun) of the sign Leo (also ruled by the Sun.) People
with this combination instinctively gravitate toward the spotlight.
His Sun is in the Show Business decanate of the Show Business sign.
He started as a leading bodybuilder and went on to star status as
an actor.
Martin Sheen was born on August 3, with the Sun at about 11 degrees
of Leo, in the second decanate (Sagittarius?ruled?by?Jupiter) of
Leo. Leo, the sign of show business, had him select acting as a
career. The Sagittarian decanate of Leo imparts a philosophical
direction to his lifestyle. Thus, it is not surprising to find Martin
Sheen at the forefront of protests and demonstrations.
Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, was born on August
19, with the Sun at about 26 degrees of Leo, in the third decanate
(Aries?ruled?by?Mars) of Leo. Here we see a pioneering slant to
a show business (Leo) career. Mars/Aries describes a pioneer who
"boldly goes where no man has gone before."
Mother Theresa, who needs no description here, was born on August
26, with the Sun at about 2 degrees of Virgo, in the first (Virgo)
decanate of Virgo. Here we see the first decanate reinforcement
of the healing (medical) nature of Virgo. It is not surprising that
Mother Theresa chose a life of service (Virgo), and, in particular,
a life of service to the sick and ailing.
It would be a pleasure to encounter Bob Newhart, the comedian,
at a social event, and to discover that he was born on September
5, with the Sun at about 12 degrees of Virgo, in the second (Capricorn?ruled?by?Saturn)
decanate of Virgo. I have always associated Capricorn with wit.
Here we see an example of a person with subtle wit modifying the
Mercury nature of a Virgo Sun.
Lauren Bacall, the actress with the unmistakable voice, was born
on September 16, with the Sun at about 23 degrees of Virgo, in the
third (Taurus?ruled?by?Venus) decanate of Virgo. Here we see the
voice (Taurus) playing its role as a modifier to the precise craftsmanship
(Virgo) of her professional career. It is no wonder that her voice
is identifiable as the "voice?over" in TV commercials.
In Part Five of this series, I shall continue the discussion of
decanates with more examples. Let me re?emphasize that the use of
decanates in no way replaces the proper interpretation of an accurately
generated horoscope. Use decanates for an enrichment of your understanding
of an accurate chart or as a shortcut where an accurate chart is
not available.
